Food Intolerances and Testing

The potential harm from food intolerances and how you can test for these

Is it a food intolerance or food allergy?

A food allergy is not the same as a food intolerance. How can you tell the difference?
An allergy is an immediate reaction to a certain food. It is instantly recognisable by the reaction in the body.
Food intolerance is a gut reaction and is not always immune related so it can be improved over time with support.

What are the symptoms of food intolerance?

Many symptoms have been linked to food intolerance and they include:
Abdominal pain, aches and pains, acne, bloating, constipation, chronic fatigue, diarrhoea, eczema, irritable bowel syndrome, itching, fluid retention, headaches, hyperactivity, migraine, nausea, rashes, rhinitis, sinusitis, stomach cramps, tension, tiredness, weight loss, weight gain.

Although reactions to foods may not be life threatening, they can make you feel extremely unwell and could have an impact on your work and social life. Sometimes intolerance to a food may not always cause the symptoms straight away. Often they can take a few hours or days to show up.

To help identify potentially problematic foods, you can use food intolerance testing kits to help to identify certain food sensitivities. The use of complementary and alternative medicine to diagnose food allergy and intolerance is growing fast. Could the foods that you eat be making you ill?
